Sireetorn Mekpanopas

Position
PhD Student

I am a PhD student at the University of Leeds in October 2023, focusing on EU governance and Cybersecurity. My academic or research experience has primarily centred on global governance and international organisation, with a particular emphasis on the European Union and contemporary security challenges.

I completed my master’s thesis at the University of Leeds in 2022 on challenges for European integration: Brexit, nationalism and populism. I also finished my BA in International Relations at Srinakharinwirot University.

My PhD research involves the EU operation on governance and crisis management in the framework of cyber threats. I will investigate the EU’s governance structure theoretically. Moreover, my project will highlight the advanced technology that is ruled by private sectors, such as Big Tech (Google, Meta or Microsoft). Those information technology companies need to be controlled under EU regulations. However, the major questions of efficiency, effectiveness and role are rising and have been challenging the EU’s authority and legitimacy.
