Roundtable Launch: "Mass Violence in Syria: Continuity and Change"Thursday 7th July 2022, 15:00-17:00This event marks the launch of the online publication of the Special Issue “Mass Violence in Syria: Continuity and Change” in the British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies (BJMES).Focusing on political violence as an integral part of the sociological, political and historical fabric of Syrian society, this special issue aims to create a better understanding of the Syrian crisis. In particular the various authors reflect and analyse how societal factors, histories of space, key events and individuals have played, and still play, a key role in the prevalence of mass violence in Syria. This special issue has its origins in a workshop that was organised in 2018 on mass violence in Syria by Uğur Ümit Üngör, Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies, at University of Amsterdam and Roschanack Shaery-Yazdi, Assistant Professor in History at the University of Antwerp. This launch event roundtable features a number of contributors from the Special Issue and is jointly organised by Dr James Worrall (as part of the Seminars on Peace and Conflict in POLIS CGSC) and Dr Josepha Wessels (Malmö University, Sweden). It features contributions from many of the contributors to the Special Issue:

Ali Aljasem, Centre for Conflict Studies, Utrecht University, The Netherlands

Samer Jabbour, American University of Beirut, Lebanon

Roschanack Shaery-Yazdi, History Department/Center for Political History, University of Antwerp, Belgium

Josepha Wessels, School of Arts and Communication, Malmö University, Sweden
