EJIS Publication: Special Issue 7(1)

This month, the European Journal of International Security  (hosted by the Centre for Global Security Challenges) published its latest issue: Special Issue 7(1): Operational experiences, military role conceptions, and their influence on civil-military relations. Guest edited by Christoph Harig, Nicole Jenne and Chiara Ruffa, this issue features contributions from diverse perspectives to explore the nature and role of military organizations in a dynamic and changing world. The Special Issue features six articles and an introduction by the guest co-editors.

Wilén and Strömbom map the military’s core roles in a changing security environment, whilst Harig and Ruffa explore civil-military relations, providing an exploratory framework of the ‘pulling’ that takes place in civil-military relations. Meanwhile, drawing on primary material and historiography of France’s postwar foreign policy, Byun explains the relationship between robust security cooperation and unbalanced distributions of power between prospective regional security partners and Brooks and Erickson investigate the sources and character of military dissent.  Jenne and Martínez explore domestic military missions in Latin America, whilst Levy explores the deployment of the Isareli Defence Force to combat the coronavirus during 2020–1. Meanwhile, Mukherjee asks how combat missions shape civil-military relations and the military's role conception, taking India as a case study. Explore this latest issue here.
